9 Great Date Ideas For Florence, Italy

Florence is one of the most romantic cities in the world. From its historic renaissance architecture to its piazzas filled with live music, to the famous Chianti wine the region is known for, Firenze is practically oozing with romance. Whether you are heading out for a first date, planning a surprise for your significant other, proposing, or enjoying your honeymoon, these date ideas, ranging from the casual to the romantic, are sure to impress!

The Coffee Date

Sitta Artigianale. Florence, Italy

The “coffee date” is a classic for a reason- it is the perfect chance to get to know someone in a casual environment without committing to a long or expensive meal. For those looking for a great coffee place for a casual date, I recommend Ditta Artigianale. The atmosphere is modern and youthful, and the cafe is always bursting with a positive energy. Additionally, the coffee is fantastic (I recommend ordering a cappuccino). Also there are two locations, one on each side of the river, so it’s easy to reach no matter where you are staying! The Gelato Date

Gelato. Florence, Italy.

Everyone loves gelato, so you really can’t go wrong taking a date to one of Florence’s most beloved gelaterias. For an authentic Gelateria that offers a variety of delicious flavors and yummy pastries, head over to Gelateria dei Neri. The best part is there is indoor seating, so you won’t have to pack up and leave once purchasing your cup or cone, and can settle down and enjoy some conversation with your cool treat.

Aperitivo

Food. Italy. Florence.

Things starting to get a bit more serious? If you are ready to commit to more than a quick coffee date, but still looking to test the waters, or trying to enjoy a dinner and a drink together without breaking the bank, then aperitivo is the perfect option for you! For around 8 euro, you can enjoy aperitivo (a small buffet and the Italian version of happy hour). Not bad for a light dinner and a drink. In Florence, I recommend trying Soul Kitchen or Kitsch. Both have good food, great drinks, and a lively, hip atmosphere.

Dinner and a Movie
Odeon. Florence, Italy

Was there ever a date combo as classic as dinner and a movie? In Florence, you can find both at the Odeon. The Odeon Bistro next door has a delicious 10 Euro aperitivo, and you can check the theater’s schedule online to see what movies are playing and in which languages. (Yes, they do play movies in English!)

Romantic Dinner

In Florence, there are so many restaurants that it can be hard to narrow down the best (or to weed out the worst)! For a night out with delicious food and a romantic atmosphere, my #1 pick is La Giostra. Upon entering, guests are greeted with a welcome glass of prosecco and by the gently lit dining area. The food is divine and staff incredibly friendly. Just be sture to call in advance and make a reservation! My other favorite restaurants for a romantic meal out include Osteria Santo Spirito and Aqua al Due.

Budget Friendly Date

Sunset. Couple. Florence, Italy

Are you looking to experience a romantic evening while saving some precious Euros? Head to the local grocery store, pick up a bottle of vino and some snacks, and walk to Florence’s stunning Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset. The view of Florence is unparalleled, but be prepared for a little hike to get there. The piazza can get a little crowded, particularly during summer, so for a more secluded view continue walking to San Miniato. Another great sunset option is the Ponte Santa Trinita, which overlooks the Ponte Vecchio.

Dinner and a View

View of Florence. Fiesole, Italy

If you are willing to venture outside of Florence, a 20-25 minute bus ride will take you to Fiesole, a small town overlooking Florence. Spend the afternoon wandering the town or visiting the nearby archaeological site, and end your day at sunset at Ristorante La Reggia. Be sure to call in advance and request a seat with a view, and enjoy a wonderful meal while taking in the beauty of Florence from afar. Learn all about Fiesole here for directions and information on things to do!

Drinks with a View

Spritz Rooftop. Florence, Italy

If staying in town is more your style, head to one of Florence’s rooftop bars! There’s no better way to see the city than from one of Florence’s rooftops, cocktail in hand. My personal favorite is the Weston, (Hotel Cavour’s bar is pictured above)  which offers a great view of the Arno and Ponte Vecchio. The Adventure Date

Couple Vespa. Florence, Italy
If you and your date have a love of adventure, a Vespa tour is a can’t miss! I recommend taking a tour of Chianti’s countryside with Tuscany Cycle.  Learn to ride a scooter, admire the vineyard views, and afterwards enjoy a meal at one of Florence’s medieval castles. Read about my most recent adventure on a Vespa here for more information.
