10 Essential Tips For Traveling As A Couple

Traveling with someone you love is an amazing way to create beautiful memories and have unforgettable adventures together. However, a trip with a significant other can quickly take a turn for the worse when things don’t go as planned. Follow these tips for traveling as a couple, and you can skip the stress that often accompanies travel and instead have the trip of a lifetime! (I promise these tips work-they helped my boyfriend and I have a 3-month long adventure together without any serious mishaps!)

Before You Go

1. Mutually select a destination

One of the most important steps in planning a dream couples getaway is choosing the right destination! Are you both beach lovers, or looking to explore a historic city? Perhaps you are looking for a location that has a bit of both. Make sure that you are both excited by what the destination you choose has to offer.

2. Decide on a budget in advance

Money certainly isn’t the most fun part of planning a trip, but working out a budget in advance will prevent any miscommunications, arguments, or awkward situations during your journey. Decide what you are both willing to spend on accommodations, activities, and food. I recommend working out a daily budget that is easy to stick to.

3. Make plans together

Before my significant other and I headed on a 3 month long adventure, we took several days to sit down and plan our trip together. Not only was it much easier to share the work of researching and booking the trip, but we both felt like we had equal input into the itinerary.

4. Take a test trip

Whether you are looking to travel together for a week or for several months, it is important to know that you both will have a great time on your trip. If you aren’t used to spending a lot of time together or haven’t traveled together before, you might want to take a test trip for a weekend to try it out.

5. Think about luggage

Packing may seem like a small detail, but discussing what type of luggage you are brining is surprisingly important. Are you backpacking? If you are flying will you need to check bags? Don’t wait until the night before to discover that sharing a suitcase isn’t going to work, or that one of you is bringing way more luggage.

On The Trip

6. Compromise

One of the best things to keep in mind when traveling as a couple is the importance of compromise. Chances are you won’t agree on every aspect of your journey, and that’s okay. Be it wake up times, activities, or transportation methods, a little compromise will go a long way in ensuring an amazing trip for both of you, and may even improve your trip overall. For example, I tend to jam-pack my itineraries, trying to “squeeze it all in” while my partner prefers taking a more relaxed approach to traveling. He helped me learn to stop and smell the roses, and my planned itineraries helped him see more during his visit.

7. Don’t be afraid to do something on your own

Just because you are traveling together doesn’t mean you have to spend every waking minute with each other. I love spending hours in museums, however, my partner does not and that’s okay. Instead of dragging him to a museum he isn’t interested in, we’ll split up for a few hours so we can both enjoy our day. Whenever something like that comes up on your trip, don’t be afraid to spend some time out on your own.

8. Meet other people

When traveling as a couple, it can be easy to get caught up with each other. If the purpose of your trip is a romantic getaway, then by all means spend your time enjoying some time together. However, if you are traveling for a long period of time, be sure to reach out and meet other people! I know that after spending 3 months together, my boyfriend and I were in need of some more varied company.

9. Don’t forget to take photos

Traveling with a significant other is great, because you’ll always have someone to capture a photograph of you. That being said, don’t forget to take photos together as a couple! My boyfriend and I always manage to get great solo shots, but rarely remember to ask someone to take a picture of the two of us. It may even be worth bringing a selfie stick along!

10. Make unforgettable memories

You and your significant other are sure to make incredible memories no matter where you go! Try something new together, knock an adventure off your bucket list, and enjoy your romance in the context of a new and unfamiliar location. Happy travels, lovebirds!
