How To: Easy DIY Springfest & Oktoberfest Flower Crown
This fall, I experienced Oktoberfest for the first time and had one of the best days of my life. Seriously, it was like Disneyland for adults. (Check out my complete guide to Oktoberfest here!) To help get myself in the spirit of the festival, I made a DIY flower crown, which I promptly lost on a ride at the fair grounds. In preparation for my upcoming trip to Springfest, I simply had to make another crown, and figured I’d share this easy DIY project with you!
Step 1: Go Shopping
A quick trip to the dollar store is all you’ll need for this simple DIY project. A nearby “Tutto a 99 cent” store had an excellent selection of faux flowers, and was the perfect spot for me to find flowers.
For 8 Euro I was able to find multicolor flowers of different shapes and sizes as well as small plastic rubber bands to attach them to the crown. If you would prefer to create a flower headband, you can purchase headbands here as well!
Step 2: Select Your Flowers
I recommend purchasing a white base color for the crown and selecting 2 accent colors. For my crown, I chose 3 long stems with white flowers to function as the crown’s base, as well as pink and yellow accent flowers to add a splash of color. I had a bunch of leftover colored flowers, so you can make this project for about 5 Euro if you are sharing with a friend.
Step 3: Create The Base
Take your 2 long base stems and put the flower ends in the middle, leaving the bare part of the stem to the side. To attach both stems together, double up your rubber bands and slide them over the flowers. Continue to add rubber bands until you feel the base is secure.
Step 4: Attach First Accent Color
Strategically add color to your crown by attaching your first accent flowers. Simply cut these flowers off of the stems and attach with rubber bands, again starting from the center of the crown and working your way out. I first added larger pink flowers to my crown. I tried to cover up any bare spaces of the crown in order to hide the brown stem and make the flowers appear more full like so:
Step 5: Repeat With Second Accent Color
To create a fuller crown and add complexity to your floral arrangement, repeat Step 4, this time adding a second accent color. For my second accent color, I used small clusters of yellow flowers as opposed to individually attaching one flower at a time.
Step 6: Create The Back
Use your 3rd long base flower stem and cut into 4 sections, rubber banding 2 and 2 together to create a total of two sections. Attach these with rubber bands to the bare stem of the flower crown and add a few colored flower accents.
Step 7: Shape Your Crown
This part is the hard part! Take each end of your crown and weave them through your network of rubber bands (being careful not to break them) until both ends are hidden within the crown and securely attached. Your crown should now be circular in shape, fitted to your head.
Step 8: Enjoy!
You are now ready to head to the festival! Have fun, enjoy a stein, and feel festive in your new flower crown. Prost!
